The challenges facing the Intermountain West are characterized by radical complexity that makes them difficult to address, and enormous consequences if we fail to address them. Feedbacks between social and environmental systems drive both of these features — e.g., climate change and land conversion acting in tandem to decrease freshwater availability and increase fire risk — and have important implications for ecosystems and social equity. Convergent research aims to move beyond interdisciplinarity to create new ways of knowing that can help us address the inextricably linked components of these systems simultaneously. The Transformation Network (TN) is a multi-institution testbed for this type of research. In this talk, team lead Mindy Morgan will share the TN's approach to convergence and how we can guide transformations in the Intermountain West.
