Indigenous Resilience Center Visiting Scholar Application 2024-2025

Summary

The Indigenous Visiting Scholars Program at the University of Arizona Indigenous Resilience Center is an opportunity for Indigenous faculty/researchers to come to the University of Arizona to learn about the Indigenous Resilience Center (IRes) and be part of IRes, to collaborate, do focused research, to network and explore collaborations, and to provide training and mentoring to students and faculty.

Award

IRes Visiting scholars will be awarded up to $10,000 depending on length of stay to conduct research on restoring and building Indigenous environmental resilience and collaborating with the Indigenous Resilience Center. The $10,000 stipend will be awarded directly to the Visiting Scholar and will include reimbursement to cover short-term lodging, travel (to and from Tucson, AZ and local travel), and food. Please consult your accountant regarding taxes.

Commitment

An IRes Visiting Scholar is expected to be on campus at the University of Arizona in person for a minimum of three weeks. The IRes Scholar applicant will be expected to give one public presentation on their work during their fellowship, one training seminar, meet with faculty and students during a coffee hour every week (depending on length of stay), and to be an active participant at the Indigenous Resilience Center programming and activities. At the completion of your Visiting Scholars Program, and before you leave IRes, you must complete a final report on the impact and value  of your visit. As appropriate, publication or research originating as a result of your residency, we kindly ask that you acknowledge funding by the University of Arizona Indigenous Resilience Center. 

Accommodations

IRes Visiting Scholars will be set up as a DCC or designated campus colleague to facilitate access to university resources. Depending on the length of stay, IRes Visiting Scholars will also receive either access to a temporary hotel work station or a more permanent office space at the University of Arizona, access to UArizona libraries, and be given a UArizona email address.

Eligibility

We are accepting applications from faculty or researchers who 1) Identify as Indigenous; 2) have a doctoral degree; and 3) conduct research in the environment.

Applications must include

  1. A short proposal (2- 3 pages) that includes the names and institutional affiliations of the researcher(s) with whom you wish to work; the nature of the work you wish to undertake; a timeline for the duration of proposed work; and a clear case for how the planned work supports the goals and priorities of the Indigenous Resilience Center. Please include how you would continue to collaborate with IRes after the Visiting Scholar Program ends.
    1. Potential areas of work can include:
  • Joint, collaborative research 
  • Emphasis on environmentally-based scope of work
  • Development of a pilot project or land-based learning initiative
  • Participation in or leading courses, workshops, field schools, and public lectures
  1. Curriculum vitae with your educational background, work experiences, and publication record.
  2. One work sample which you consider is the most representative of your research. We prefer published writing (articles, book chapters, essays) but will accept various other types of work samples (video, audio, websites, etc.)

Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • The quality of your proposed research project;
  • Your experience and impact with Indigenous communities in environmental resilience;
  • The alignment of your research proposal with the goals of the Indigenous Resilience Center; and
  • The potential to foster long-term relationships or collaborations with the Indigenous Resilience Center.

Selection

Applications will be considered by the Indigenous Resilience Center Committee. Finalists will be invited for an online zoom interview. Selected applicants will be notified by September 1, 2024 for the Fall and Spring 2024-Fall 2025 residency and March  1, 2025 for the Summer 2025 residency.
