Marti Lindsey, PhD, was the Director of the Community Engagement Core of the Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center from 2002 to 2021. She collaborated with basic and public health scientists, integrating community engagement with environmental health sciences research. The audiences for many SWEHSC environmental health outreach activities were professionals and public members of tribal communities. Lindsey shared her experience living in tribal communities and working with tribes with others doing similar work. Under her leadership, the CEC hosted Tribal Forums for Health and the Environment, where American Indian students and collaborators presented, in 2015, 2017, and 2019 and published the Indigenous Stewards magazine. Her research focuses on community engagement in American Indian communities, environmental health literacy, risk communication, and best practices for STEM education. In 2007 she developed the model for high school students a taste of research careers in summer internships. The model developed and expanded into four additional programs, two of which are for Tribal students.
